PhotoStory is a
non-profit organization offering projects that teach photography, video
and writing skills to people around the globe, focusing on women and
children. By conducting participatory educational workshops, often
in marginalized communities, PhotoStory promotes literacy, encourages
creative expression, and nurtures self-esteem and empowerment.
PhotoStory works with
individuals, local and international groups, non-governmental organizations,
schools, and community learning centers to arrange individualized workshops
taught by Deirdre Portnoy, Project Director.
During a workshop,
the children and/or women use simple cameras and journal writing to create
their own photo storybook. We also share and discuss the photo stories
from past projects. The PhotoStory process enables individuals to visualize
and express different aspects of their daily lives, and helps communicate
the collective experience of diverse groups and cultures.
In these challenging
times, it is essential that we personalize our common human experience.
The PhotoStory project contributes to multi-cultural exchange and dialogue
by sharing these stories through international presentations, exhibits
and the Internet.
Personal photo stories
connect the global community and weave a vivid tapestry- image-by-image,
story-by-story, community-by-community - that challenges stereotypes
and deepens empathy and understanding.
